Do you want to relax after a long day at work? Be auditorily comforted, soothed, massaged into a stress-less, care-free state? Do you want to close your eyes and see sweet little cherubim circling your head, sprinkling you with love and kindness? Me too. Which is why I listen to Juana Molina. Her music is pure, marvelous, blissed-out South American magic. I suggest starting with albums Segundo or Son.
As much as I dislike their reviewers for so thoroughly panning The Mars Volta, I now mention that Pitchfork gave The Ecstatic an 8.0, which I understand is quite excellent, and awarded it their “best new music” sticker. Check it out at Grooveshark first before buying from a friendly local retailer.
This album is great. It’s seriousness comes through via a crowd-pleasing eccentricity, and each song has an irresistible hook. I’ve got it on repeat, and have rekindled the crush I had on Mos Def after his video with Alicia Keys came out in, what…2003? I feel old.
